Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has delivered a shock suggestion that a return to the Anfield dugout is “theoretically possible,” nearly two years after emotionally announcing his departure.
Speaking on the Diary of a CEO podcast, the German, who currently serves as Global Head of Soccer for Red Bull’s football franchise, clarified that any future coaching role in England would only ever be with the Reds, a statement that will instantly ignite speculation among the Anfield faithful.
Klopp, who departed having secured the Premier League, Champions League, and multiple domestic cups during his nine-year tenure, left the door slightly ajar for a second spell on Merseyside.
When pressed on the possibility of a return, the 58-year-old stated: “I said I would never coach a different team in England. So that means if, (I did return to England) then it’s Liverpool. Yeah, theoretically it’s possible.”
However, the veteran coach was quick to temper expectations, admitting he is currently enjoying his break from the daily intensity of club management. He stressed that he does not miss many of the routines that come with the job.
”I don’t miss coaching. I don’t… I don’t miss standing in the rain for two-and-a-half or three hours. I also don’t miss going to press conferences three times a week,” Klopp confessed, adding a characteristic joke: “I don’t want to die in the dressing room because it smells.”
While he is not looking to return immediately, Klopp suggested a decision on his future could be made in a few years. He concluded: “I’m 58… That means I could make a decision in a few years. I don’t know. Do I have to make a decision today? I will not coach again, but thank God I do not have to do that, I can just see what the future brings.”
