Keith Andrews comments on controversial VAR decisions

Brentford boss Keith Andrews discussed the controversial VAR decisions during his side’s 3-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle United, opting for a diplomatic post-match stance.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews has taken a measured stance on the controversial VAR incidents that overshadowed his team’s 3-1 victory against Newcastle United, refusing to openly criticise the match officials post-game.

The fixture was marred by two highly contentious decisions involving forward Dango Ouattara and Newcastle defender Dan Burn.

In the first incident, Ouattara was booked for simulation after contact with Burn, a call VAR upheld, with the Premier League Match Centre later stating the contact was deemed “minimal.”

Just minutes later, Ouattara was tripped by Burn, leading to a penalty and a second yellow card for the Magpies man.

Despite his visible frustration on the touchline during the match, Andrews deliberately avoided re-watching the footage before his press conference. When asked about his views, he responded:

“I’ve purposely not looked them back, to be honest, because I don’t want it to be the main thing I’ve discussed today.”

Andrews was firm that the incidents did not determine the result: “I don’t think it’s been the main reason why the game has been decided. Some people might disagree with that.”

The Brentford boss maintained his long-standing policy of not attacking the refereeing body, though he admitted the second incident was likely a penalty.

“I just don’t think it’s right. It’s a difficult job at the best of times,” Andrews stated. He concluded by acknowledging the prevailing view of the second key moment:

“But yeah, I think from what I’m hearing, it’s probably a penalty. But no, I haven’t had any explanation out of it yet.”
