Robert Lewandowski may return to the Poland national team after speaking with new manager Jan Urban. Lewandowski quit the team after a falling out with the previous coach, but is now considering a comeback, which would be a massive boost for Poland’s World Cup qualifying chances.
Robert Lewandowski, Poland's all-time leading scorer, is considering a return to the national team following a conversation with new manager Jan Urban. Lewandowski had previously stepped away from international duty after a fallout with former coach Michal Probierz, who controversially stripped him of the captain's armband. Probierz's subsequent resignation in June paved the way for Urban's appointment and opened the door for a potential reconciliation.
Urban wasted no time in reaching out to Lewandowski, gauging his interest in rejoining the squad as they navigate the crucial World Cup qualifying campaign. Poland currently sits third in their group, trailing Finland by a single point and level with the Netherlands. Lewandowski's return would undoubtedly bolster their chances of securing a spot in the 2026 tournament.
"I spoke with Robert Lewandowski by phone and asked if he wanted to come back," Urban revealed. "He said yes. So, we've taken a step forward."
While Lewandowski's return seems promising, Urban emphasized that the captaincy is not automatically guaranteed. He intends to consult with key players, including Piotr Zielinski and members of the team council, before making a final decision on who will wear the armband. Poland's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands and Finland in September will be crucial tests as they aim to secure their place in the tournament.
