Robert Lewandowski expresses surprise at learning from younger Barcelona teammates, highlighting Lamine Yamal and Raphinha’s Ballon d’Or potential. Despite his vast experience, Lewandowski emphasizes the importance of collaboration and continuous improvement as Barcelona prepares to defend their La Liga title.
Robert Lewandowski, the seasoned Barcelona striker, has made a surprising admission: he's learning a great deal from his younger teammates. Despite his vast experience and impressive track record, the 37-year-old is finding fresh perspectives and inspiration from the next generation of players at the club.
Lewandowski's contribution to Barcelona's success last season was undeniable. He netted 42 goals and provided three assists across all competitions, playing a pivotal role in the team's domestic treble. His goal-scoring prowess placed him second only to Kylian Mbappe (43 goals) among players in Europe's top five leagues.
The Polish international was instrumental in Hansi Flick's side's remarkable achievement of scoring 102 goals in La Liga during the previous campaign. Barcelona stood out as the sole team in Europe's top five divisions to surpass the 100-goal mark in the 2024-25 season. This feat highlighted the team's attacking strength and Lewandowski's integral role in their offensive strategy.
Lewandowski's humility shines through as he acknowledges the value of learning from younger players. "When I see that I still don't have to catch the young guys, that they still have to catch me, it means this next season can also be very good," Lewandowski told BBC Sport, highlighting his determination to maintain his high standards. "I am still there to show the best performance from myself."
He emphasizes a collaborative approach, stating, "I understood that I cannot fight with them, but I can help them and they can also help me. I learn from them a lot. I didn't think it would happen like that." This willingness to learn and adapt underscores Lewandowski's commitment to continuous improvement.
One standout talent among Barcelona's younger ranks is Lamine Yamal. The 18-year-old winger had an exceptional season, leading La Liga with 13 assists. He also showcased his dribbling skills, attempting 309 dribbles and completing an impressive 161.
Yamal's impact on Barcelona's attacking play is already significant. He has been directly involved in 53 goals (25 goals, 28 assists) in all competitions. His achievements extend beyond club football, as he also played a key role in Spain's Euro 2024 victory.
Another player who impressed for Barcelona last season was Raphinha. The Brazilian winger recorded 56 goal involvements (34 goals, 22 assists) in all competitions.
Lewandowski believes that both Yamal and Raphinha have strong potential to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or award. "It is the first time in my life I saw after 50 minutes that he [Yamal] had something special," Lewandowski noted. "I didn't believe it because I didn't see this kind of player at this age – I thought this is impossible at 15."
He added, "Lamine Yamal's season was incredible, but in the end it depends on what is most important. He still has a lot of time, if not this year, maybe next year. Raphinha also had an amazing season. We have players who can be one of the favorites to win this kind of title."
Barcelona's La Liga title defense begins on Saturday, August 16, with an away match against Mallorca.
