Ademola Lookman’s long-range winner ensured Nigeria a successful start to AFCON 2025 following a competitive 2-1 triumph over Tanzania.
Nigeria commenced their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a narrow 2-1 victory over Tanzania at the Dahane Beida stadium.
The Super Eagles dominated early proceedings, with Victor Osimhen threatening the Tanzanian goal on multiple occasions.
The deadlock was eventually broken in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi rose highest to power home a header from a corner kick, marking his first goal of the competition.
Tanzania responded early in the second half, stunning the favorites when Charles M’Mombwa equalized in the 50th minute.
However, the parity lasted only two minutes as Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s lead with a spectacular left-footed strike from outside the penalty area.
Despite late pressure and several missed opportunities from both sides, the Super Eagles held firm to secure the three points and move to the top of Group C.
Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon were instrumental in Nigeria’s creative play, providing the service for a front line that registered 23 attempts on goal.
Tanzania’s Zuberi Foba was noted for his resilient performance in goal, keeping his side in the match until the final whistle.
As the tournament progresses, Nigeria will look to refine their finishing, while Tanzania takes confidence from pushing one of the continent’s heavyweights to the limit.
