Campos emphasized the club’s merit-based salary policy and prioritizing stability over individual demands. Donnarumma debuted for City; PSG faces Atalanta in Champions League.
Paris Saint-Germain's director, Luis Campos, has shed light on the circumstances surrounding Gianluigi Donnarumma's exit from the club, revealing that a new salary request played a significant role in the decision. The Italian goalkeeper, who joined Manchester City towards the end of the summer transfer window, had made 104 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG since his arrival from AC Milan in 2021.
During his tenure with PSG, Donnarumma showcased his shot-stopping prowess, maintaining 32 clean sheets and saving an impressive 74.9% of shots faced in league matches. His contributions were also instrumental in PSG's Champions League campaign, where he made crucial saves against formidable opponents like Arsenal and Aston Villa, and played a pivotal role in a penalty shootout victory against Liverpool in the round of 16.
While Donnarumma had previously stated that head coach Luis Enrique had advised him to seek a new club during pre-season training, Campos has now provided a more detailed explanation of the factors that led to the move. "The club is more important than anyone. That has changed at PSG," Campos emphasized in an interview with RMC.
Campos elaborated that Donnarumma's departure was influenced by a combination of factors, including the goalkeeper's salary demands. "Donnarumma's case was a set of circumstances that led to this decision, as he requested a salary at the level of the old PSG, not the current one," Campos explained. He further clarified PSG's salary policy, stating, "Our policy is very tied to merit. You earn more when you deserve it and when you play."
According to Campos, PSG had initially approached Donnarumma about a contract extension, but negotiations quickly stalled due to his financial expectations. "Gianluigi was the first player we approached about an extension, but we quickly understood that it will be difficult due to his demands," Campos revealed. He added, "We took time to discuss Gigio's situation. We were forced to find solutions in a case where we couldn’t reach an agreement."
Campos concluded by reiterating the club's stance on player compensation, emphasizing that the club's overall stability takes precedence over individual demands. "The star is the club, the whole group. The salary policy applies to everyone. The club’s stability will not change because of one player who wants to be different," he asserted.
Donnarumma has already made his debut for Manchester City, featuring in their 3-0 victory over Manchester United. Meanwhile, PSG is gearing up for their Champions League title defense, with their first match against Atalanta scheduled for Wednesday. Manchester City will also be in action a day later, facing Napoli.
