James Maddison of Tottenham Hotspur has expressed his devastation following surgery to repair a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The injury, sustained during a pre-season match against Newcastle United in South Korea, required reconstructive surgery, leaving Maddison sidelined. He described the setback as the "lowest low I've ever had".
The England international, who recorded 16 goal contributions last season, missed the end of the 2024-25 campaign due to a knee issue, including Tottenham's Europa League final victory in Bilbao. His absence is a significant blow to both club and country.
In an emotional Instagram post, Maddison shared his heartbreak. "Heartbroken at the fact this injury has occurred at this time in my career," he wrote. "With the UEFA Super Cup tomorrow, the Premier League season on the horizon, the exciting Champions League campaign and it being a World Cup year for England it all feels very, very cruel."
Despite the setback, Maddison vowed to return stronger and addressed his critics directly. "To those who doubt, hate and mock, you truly motivate me to levels I didn't know I had inside of me… See you all on the other side," he declared.
Tottenham are preparing to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup, followed by their Premier League opener against Burnley. The club also saw a captaincy change after Son Heung-min's move to Los Angeles FC, with Cristian Romero now entrusted with the armband.
