Donyell Malen scored twice for Aston Villa to secure a victory over Burnley, who could only manage a late consolation goal from Lesley Ugochukwu in another disappointing outing for the Clarets.
Burnley slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa on Sunday, their fifth loss in seven Premier League games this season.
Villa capitalised on defensive lapses as Donyell Malen struck twice, exploiting space behind Burnley’s backline. The forward opened the scoring midway through the first half and doubled the lead shortly after the hour mark, leaving Scott Parker’s men with a mountain to climb.
Lesley Ugochukwu gave the visitors hope 12 minutes from time, heading home unmarked from Quilindschy Hartman’s corner, but Burnley failed to build momentum and could not find an equaliser.
Martin Dubravka made several key saves to prevent further damage, while Axel Tuanzebe made his first league appearance for the Clarets in place of Hjalmar Ekdal, who was surprisingly left out of the squad.
The result leaves Burnley in the bottom three going into the international break, with a crucial clash against Leeds United to come after the resumption of the season.
