Man, 59, avoids prison for racist, sexist social media abuse of England’s Jess Carter

A 59-year-old man, Nigel Dewale, has received a suspended prison sentence and a four-year football banning order after pleading guilty to sending racist and misogynistic social media messages to England defender Jess Carter during Euro 2025.

Nigel Dewale was handed a six-week sentence, suspended for 12 months, at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The investigation by the UK Football Policing Unit traced “racist and highly misogynistic” TikTok messages sent to Jess Carter back to Dewale’s Lancashire home.

In addition to the suspended term, he received a three-month curfew and was ordered to pay various court costs and victim surcharges.

Chief Constable Mark Roberts welcomed the sentencing, noting that Dewale erroneously believed he could hide behind an anonymous account.

Carter had previously spoken out against the abuse, stating, “Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don’t agree or think it’s ok to target someone’s appearance or race.”
