Inter Milan’s second goalkeeper, Josep Martínez, was involved in a tragic road accident on Monday morning in Milan that resulted in the death of an elderly person.
The incident occurred in Fenegró, near Como, around 9:30 AM, according to a report from Repubblica cited by Gamereactor.
Martínez, a Spanish international, was reportedly driving in the vicinity of Inter’s training grounds when his car struck an 81-year-old man in a wheelchair, who died instantly.
The report suggests that the elderly man may have suffered a sudden illness, causing him to veer into the goalkeeper’s lane.
Martínez immediately pulled over to render aid at the scene, but tragically, his efforts were in vain. The Gamereactor report noted the impact of the event on the 27-year-old player:
“The goalkeeper stopped immediately to provide first aid, but couldn’t do anything, and was left shocked and affected by the sudden and tragic accident.”
Martínez signed for Inter Milan in 2024 and serves as the backup to Yann Sommer, having made ten appearances primarily in cup and league matches.
Details regarding any investigation into the incident have not yet been fully released. The football club is expected to issue a statement addressing the tragic event.
