Man United’s women celebrate Champions League debut with win as Chelsea draws

Manchester United’s women marked their Champions League debut with a 1-0 win over Valerenga, while Chelsea were frustrated in a 1-1 draw at FC Twente.

Manchester United’s women made a dream start to their Champions League journey with a 1-0 victory over Valerenga on Wednesday, while Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw at FC Twente.

Formed only in 2018, United’s rise to Europe’s elite stage was crowned by Maya Le Tissier’s first-half penalty that sealed a historic win for the Red Devils. Chelsea, meanwhile, failed to convert dominance into three points as Danique Van Ginkel’s strike put Twente ahead before Sandi Baltimore equalised from the spot after Guro Reiten was fouled.

Elsewhere, Wolfsburg thrashed Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 with goals from Ella Peddemors, Alexandra Popp, and Janina Minge, while Real Madrid demolished Roma 6-2, featuring doubles from Caroline Weir and Alba Redondo. Defending champions Arsenal lost 2-1 to Lyon, and Barcelona crushed Bayern Munich 7-1 in Tuesday’s standout tie.

This season’s expanded format features 18 teams in a league phase, with the top four qualifying directly for the quarter-finals and the next eight contesting play-offs for the remaining spots.
