Former Manchester United star Diego Forlan was rushed to a local hospital over the weekend after suffering a severe injury during an over-40s Liga Universitaria match in Uruguay. The 46-year-old, playing for Old Boys in their 4-1 victory, sustained a “sickening collision” with an opposing player.
The United cult hero was rushed into the dressing room where he was diagnosed with three broken ribs and a partially-collapsed lung, before being taken to a local hospital.
According to Referi, Forlan needed to have his lung drained after it filled with fluid due to the trauma.
Despite the severity of the incident, the former striker was quick to absolve his opponent of any fault. He told those close to him there was “no bad intention” from the opponent. Forlan is now said to be in a good condition and is expected to remain in hospital until Tuesday.
Forlan is a beloved figure among Red Devils fans, having etched his name into club folklore for his famous quickfire brace against Liverpool at Anfield in 2002.
