Manchester United pays tribute lifelong fan Mani, who passes away at 63

Manchester United has paid a touching tribute to Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, the Stone Roses bassist and lifelong fan, who sadly passed away at 63, remembering his enduring connection to the club through music and unwavering support.

According to a report from Manchester United, the club has expressed deep sorrow at the passing of Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the former Stone Roses and Primal Scream bassist, who died aged 63.

United described Mani as a “much-loved” figure and noted that his connection to the club ran deep: he was a lifelong Red, and his music was regularly played at Old Trafford.

The club said his presence would be sorely missed, adding, “Mani and The Stone Roses will always be associated with Manchester United.”

In their statement, United recalled Mani’s own words: “I’m a Manc and support United. It was pre-ordained because all my family are Reds … the club was part of his DNA and he was proud to be Red.”

They highlighted his commitment, noting that he even sold his prized scooter to attend the 1999 Champions League final in Barcelona — a moment he later said “was infinitely worth it.”

Man United also remembered Mani’s on-field connection to the club, saying his music continues to feature at matchday events, including when the players emerge from the tunnel to the tune of This Is the One.

The club offered its condolences to Mani’s family and friends, noting that his impact on both Manchester’s football and music scenes was profound and enduring.
