Maresca boycotts post-match duties as Caballero steps in

Willy Caballero stood in for an ill Enzo Maresca to address Chelsea’s defensive lapses and lack of clinical finishing following a -2-2 home draw against Bournemouth.

Chelsea assistant manager Willy Caballero assumed post-match media duties on Tuesday after head coach Enzo Maresca was sidelined by illness.

Speaking following the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, Caballero revealed that Maresca had been feeling unwell for several days and was unable to attend the press conference.

The absence capped a difficult evening for the Blues, who saw their control of the match slip away after a frantic four-goal opening half-hour.

The assistant coach expressed deep frustration over the manner in which Chelsea conceded, noting that both Bournemouth goals originated from similar set-piece situations.

Despite praising the team’s creative play, Caballero emphasized the need for immediate defensive corrections.

He stated, “It was a crazy first half. We conceded two goals the same way. It’s something we need to correct immediately but the players showed up, they created. The open play was perfect.”

Looking forward, Caballero highlighted the squad’s lack of clinical finishing as the primary reason for dropping points at home.

While acknowledging the quality of individual performances from players like Estevao and Cole Palmer, he urged the team to become more ruthless.

He concluded, “The final product was missing. We arrived to the box… we are improving in certain things but we still need to kill games, maintain the score when we are winning.”
