Union Berlin has appointed Marie-Louise Eta as the first female head coach in a top-tier European men’s league following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart.
Union Berlin has made history by appointing Marie-Louise Eta (34) as their new head coach. Following a humiliating 3-1 defeat to FC Heidenheim, the Bundesliga side sacked Steffen Baumgart and promoted Eta from her role with the Under-19s.
This landmark move makes her the first woman to lead a team in a top European men’s league.
The club is seeking an immediate turnaround to secure their top-flight status. General manager Horst Heldt stated: “I am delighted that Marie-Louise has agreed to take on this role on an interim basis.
Before she becomes head coach of the professional women’s team in the summer, as planned.” Eta will debut on the bench next week against VfL Wolfsburg.
