How thunderstorms and lightning could impact games at World Cup
World Cup Weather Woes Ahead
Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca called a Club World Cup delay due to extreme weather “a joke” last summer. The Benfica tie in Charlotte halted in the 86th minute over lightning. With the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico coinciding with peak thunderstorm season, similar game interruptions are highly probable.

Thomas Müller compares North American football to German handball
Bayern Munich legend Thomas Müller, now playing for Vancouver Whitecaps, says soccer in North America lacks mainstream dominance but maintains a passionate, “euphoric” subculture similar to handball in Germany.
Thomas Müller has shared his observations on the sporting landscape in North America, noting that soccer still lacks mainstream significance.
Speaking to Kicker, the Vancouver Whitecaps star observed that the sport is rarely the topic of office conversation.
Müller remarked, “The ranking of football is perhaps comparable to handball in Germany,” citing the historical dominance of ice hockey, basketball, and American football across the region.
Despite the lower cultural ranking, Müller praised the intensity of the “football bubble,” noting that playoff matches can draw 50,000 spectators.
He highlighted the “euphoric atmosphere” within stadiums, even if the general population remains focused elsewhere.
While enjoying his time abroad, Müller confirmed his eventual return home, stating, “I’ll definitely be returning to Germany, where my roots are so very deep.”

Former Bayern Munich star Thomas Müller has shocking selection for favorite pundit
Vancouver Whitecaps star Thomas Müller has surprisingly named frequent Bayern Munich critic Didi Hamann as his favorite football pundit, praising his authenticity and passionate delivery of bold arguments.
Former Bayern Munich icon Thomas Müller has sparked debate by naming Didi Hamann as his preferred football expert.
Despite Hamann’s history of stinging critiques regarding Bayern’s leadership and players like Jamal Musiala, Müller appreciates the pundit’s polarizing style.
Now playing in MLS, the veteran forward told Bild that while he often disagrees with Hamann’s specific takes, he values the entertainment and debate they generate.
Müller highlighted Hamann’s consistency and willingness to defend controversial theses as key strengths.
“n keeping with his spirit, I’m just going to throw one out there. Curtain up for Didi Hamann. Didi often has opinions that I don’t share.
But what’s much more important to me is that he presents his arguments coherently, defends his theses with passion, and is authentic in doing so,” Müller stated.

Landon Donovan names his USMNT 2026 World Cup roster, no Musah
Landon Donovan unveiled his 26-player roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting breakout stars Gio Reyna and Sebastian Berhalter, and outlining key selections across all positions.
USMNT legend Landon Donovan has named the 26 players he would send to the 2026 FIFA World Cup if the tournament started today, highlighting recent standout performances from Gio Reyna and Sebastian Berhalter.
According to a report from Sports Illustrated, U.S. men’s national team icon Landon Donovan selected the 26 players he believes should be on the USMNT roster for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Donovan, who holds USMNT records for appearances and goals, made his selections following the team’s successful camp, including a 5–1 thrashing of Uruguay.
Donovan singled out two November standouts for special mention: Gio Reyna and Sebastian Berhalter. Both players “scored and assisted goals this camp” and, in Donovan’s eyes, Reyna is “on a plane to California next summer.”
Berhalter, after a strong season with the Vancouver Whitecaps, has “played himself into a role as well after bossing a talented Uruguay side.”
In his selection, Donovan chose four center backs despite Coach Mauricio Pochettino’s recent tactical switch to a 3-4-3 formation.
Key players named include Christian Pulisic (AC Milan, 82 caps), Tyler Adams (Bournemouth, 52 caps), and Weston McKennie (Juventus, 62 caps).
Up front, the striker position is “straightforward,” with Folarin Balogun (AS Monaco, 23 caps) leading the line, supported by Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright as bench options. Balogun “cemented his status as the main man up top after scoring the game winner against Paraguay.”
Notably excluded from Donovan’s list were Yunus Musah and Joe Scally.
