In a surprising turn of events, Matt Turner is back with the New England Revolution, just weeks after securing a move to Lyon from Nottingham Forest. The American goalkeeper's journey has taken an unexpected detour, much to the delight of Revolution fans.
Turner's transfer to Lyon was finalized for a reported £6.5 million (€7.4 million). However, instead of settling into Ligue 1, the 31-year-old will rejoin the Revolution on loan until June 2026, with an option to make the deal permanent. It's a move that has sparked intrigue and excitement across the soccer world.
Turner's career has been a story of perseverance. After initially moving to England in 2022 to join Arsenal, he found limited opportunities, featuring in only a handful of FA Cup and Europa League matches under Mikel Arteta. A subsequent move to Nottingham Forest saw him make 17 league appearances, but he eventually lost his starting spot.
A loan spell with Crystal Palace during the 2024-25 season provided a brief resurgence, highlighted by two clean sheets in their FA Cup-winning campaign. Now, Turner is eager to reignite his career back in MLS, where he initially made his name.
"It is a privilege to return to the club that launched my career," Turner expressed on the Revolution's website. "The club that helped me discover who I am as a professional, the club that has always felt like a home away from home."
He added, "To have the chance to play in front of the Revolution supporters once again is a priceless feeling and one I’ve never taken for granted. My family and I have felt their unwavering support throughout these last three years, and I can’t wait to wear the Revolution crest again at Gillette Stadium. I am grateful for this opportunity to earn my place on the field and look forward to winning many more games with the Revolution."
