Monaco under investigation for over €4.8m DR Congo sponsorship deal

AS Monaco is under judicial investigation for alleged financial crimes linked to a controversial €4.8 million sponsorship agreement with the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Monégasque authorities have launched a preliminary investigation into AS Monaco’s partnership with the Democratic Republic of Congo following allegations of money laundering and corruption.

The €4.8 million deal, featuring the “Heart of Africa” slogan, is under fire after two citizens filed a formal complaint.

The club stated, “AS Monaco takes note and remains at the disposal of the competent authorities,” regarding the ongoing legal probe.

The investigation focuses on the potential misappropriation of public funds and breaches in procurement regulations.

Critics, including lawyer Hervé Diakese, allege the contract bypassed transparency to facilitate illegal commissions.

“We are entering a logic of illegal practices with kickbacks and commissions; there are matters to verify,” Diakese noted.

Prosecutors are now tracing the funds to determine if embezzled assets were laundered through the sponsorship.
