Morocco’s 2030 World Cup spending triggers deadly youth protests demanding government dismissal and reforms, with Al Jazeera reporting three fatalities.
At least two people have died during youth protests sparked by anger at the government’s spending on preparations for the 2030 football World Cup.
These are the first reported fatalities after mass youth-led demonstrations erupted across the country, prompted by public anger over the government’s decision to prioritise building stadiums for the 2030 World Cup instead of investing in public services or easing the economic crisis. Al Jazeera and the New York Times report that the death toll has risen to three.
A rallying cry among Gen Z protesters has been: ‘Stadiums are here, but where are the hospitals?’
The demonstrations demand the dismissal of the current government for its failure to protect the constitutional rights of Moroccans as well as reforms to the health and education sectors.
