New York bill proposes outdoor entertainment zones for World Cup

A newly proposed New York bill seeks to establish temporary outdoor drinking zones to boost local business and enhance the fan experience during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Assemblymember Tony Simone has introduced the HOST Act, a bill designed to permit outdoor and public drinking in designated New York neighborhoods during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

If passed, local leaders could establish “entertainment zones” where fans can carry alcohol between participating bars.

Simone emphasized the economic potential, stating, “The World Cup kickoff is coming. Let’s make sure small businesses are in the starting lineup.”

The legislation aims to help the hospitality industry accommodate the massive influx of tourists expected for the tournament.

Manhattan bar owners have expressed enthusiasm for the European-style atmosphere the bill would create.

“I think it would work for the city, and I think people would really like it,” said Sean Burger, owner of Hibernia Bar. The temporary measure would remain in effect from June 1 to July 31.
