Newcastle United and Bayer Leverkusen both secured their spots in the Champions League last 16 after aggregate victories over Qarabag and Olympiacos respectively.
Newcastle United eased into the Champions League last 16 following a 3-2 victory over Qarabag, securing a dominant 9-3 aggregate win.
Early goals from Sandro Tonali and Joelinton, followed by a Sven Botman header, ensured the Magpies joined five other English clubs in the next round.
Despite the win, manager Eddie Howe noted: “Today feels like a bit of a hollow win for us.”
Bayer Leverkusen also progressed after a scoreless draw against Olympiacos, advancing 2-0 on aggregate.
It marks the German side’s first successful two-legged knockout tie since their 2002 final appearance.
Frustrated by the lethargic performance, captain Robert Andrich admitted: “The game didn’t go at all like we’d imagined. Too sluggish — really the only positive is that we kept a clean sheet and we’re through.”
