Tottenham Hotspur has decided to withdraw from the race to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, potentially clearing the path for Newcastle United to secure the player. Financial considerations and the player’s age were factors in Tottenham’s decision, as they deemed the £40 million price tag too high for a 29-year-old with only one year left on his contract. Newcastle United is now the frontrunner to sign Wissa.
Tottenham Hotspur has reportedly ended its pursuit of Brentford's striker, Yoane Wissa, according to information released by TBR. This decision opens the door for Newcastle United, who are now aggressively pursuing Wissa to bring him to St. James’ Park before the transfer window closes.
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, "Spurs did open talks with Yoane Wissa when Frank first came in. That was a player Frank specifically identified. But it looks like Wissa’s nailed on for Newcastle now."
Bailey also noted the strategic considerations behind the move, elaborating on how Frank initially planned to integrate Wissa into the team. He said, "Frank made it clear from day one that he told Wissa exactly how he wanted to use him, centrally."
However, financial realities appear to have influenced Tottenham's decision. As Bailey explained, "I think Frank also understands the reality. Do you really pay £40 million for a 29-year-old with one year left on his deal? Tottenham are never going to do that. Newcastle look like they will, but there are other reasons behind that move."
