Nigeria edge Lesotho 2-1 to boost World Cup qualification hopes

Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a 2-1 victory over Lesotho in their World Cup qualifier, confirming a strong start to their campaign.

Nigeria took a big step toward qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after goals from William Troost-Ekong and Akor Adams sealed a hard-fought 2-1 win over Lesotho.

The Super Eagles entered the match three points behind Benin and South Africa, but a draw for Bafana Bafana boosted their chances heading into the final qualifier. Benin’s victory, however, keeps them in pole position to claim the automatic spot.

Nigeria were far from fluent, struggling to create clear chances in a cagey first half despite fielding Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi. The breakthrough came ten minutes after the restart when Lesotho’s Motlomelo Mkwanazi handled in the box, allowing captain Troost-Ekong to convert from the spot.

Akor Adams later doubled the lead before a late Lesotho goal made for a tense finish. The win leaves Nigeria’s World Cup hopes alive ahead of a decisive clash with Benin.
