Nigeria to meet Morocco in AFCON semi-final

Victor Osimhen scored and assisted as Nigeria defeated Algeria 2–0 to advance to the AFCON semi-finals, where they will face host nation Morocco.

Nigeria secured a commanding 2–0 victory over Algeria in Marrakesh on Saturday, booking a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

Despite a scoreless first half where Akor Adams missed a clear opportunity and Calvin Bassey saw an effort cleared off the line, the Super Eagles remained composed.

The win keeps Nigeria’s dreams of a fourth continental title alive as they prepare for a hostile semi-final atmosphere in Rabat against the host nation.

Victor Osimhen proved decisive, scoring the opener just two minutes after the restart by heading home a deep cross from Bruno Onyemaechi.

The Galatasaray striker, who now has four goals in his last four matches, later turned provider by unselfishly squaring the ball to Akor Adams.

Adams rounded goalkeeper Luca Zidane to double the lead, cementing Nigeria’s status as the tournament’s top scorers with a total of 14 goals.

Algeria, despite featuring a star-studded attack including Riyad Mahrez, failed to register a single shot in the first half against a disciplined Nigerian defense.

While Vladimir Petkovic’s side showed promise earlier in the tournament, they were unable to replicate their 2019 success over the Super Eagles.

Following a brief moment of tension between the teams at full-time, Nigeria now turns its focus to Wednesday’s high-stakes showdown against tournament hosts Morocco.
