Nigeria’s World Cup hopes on the brink

Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada hang in the balance as they prepare for a decisive clash against Benin on Tuesday in Uyo.

The Super Eagles sit third in Group C with 14 points, trailing leaders Benin (17) and second-placed South Africa (15). Only a victory will keep Nigeria’s hopes alive.

Their build-up was further disrupted when the team’s flight from South Africa made an emergency landing in Angola. According to the Nigerian FA, the plane returned after “a heavy crack on the aircraft’s windshield distorted what had started as a smooth flight.”

Nigeria must win to avoid missing the World Cup for the first time since 2006. A defeat would end their campaign, while a win—combined with a South Africa loss to already-eliminated Rwanda—could see them top the group.

If they finish second, Nigeria would need to rank among the top four runners-up across nine CAF groups to enter a playoff for an intercontinental spot. That path would involve a knockout stage before facing teams from other confederations.

Failure to qualify directly would mark a historic low for one of Africa’s most talented teams, whose World Cup hopes now depend on results beyond their control.
