Martin Odegaard lauded Declan Rice for an “unbelievable” performance as an emergency right-back in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Brighton, a result that returned the Gunners to the top of the Premier League table.
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard praised Declan Rice’s “unbelievable” tactical flexibility after the England international filled in as an emergency right-back during Saturday’s 2-1 win over Brighton.
The Gunners were forced into the radical change after Jurrien Timber and Ben White were sidelined with injuries, while Riccardo Calafiori withdrew following a late setback in the warm-up.
Despite playing out of position, Rice’s defensive discipline helped secure the victory, keeping Mikel Arteta’s side at the summit of the Premier League.
Odegaard, who opened the scoring at the Emirates with a crisp first-half strike, believes the 26-year-old’s selfless display epitomizes the squad’s title-winning mentality.
“To play right-back, probably the first time in his life, and then do it the way he did it today was unbelievable,” Odegaard remarked. “Everyone is ready to do whatever it takes, and that was another good example of that.”
The victory restores momentum for the Gunners as they prepare to face surprise title challengers Aston Villa on Tuesday.
The match also marked a personal milestone for Odegaard, whose opener was his first goal of the 2025/26 campaign following a lengthy wait.
The Norwegian maestro credited his persistence and chemistry with Bukayo Saka for the breakthrough. “I’ve been waiting for that one and working really hard to improve on my finishing,” he explained.
With a mounting injury list in defense, Rice may be called upon to reprise his makeshift role as Arsenal look to widen their lead at the top.
