Victor Osimhen enters Wednesday’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against Morocco as the pivotal figure for Nigeria, sitting just two goals shy of Rashidi Yekini’s legendary all-time scoring record of 37 goals.
Despite a recent high-profile on-field dispute with teammate Ademola Lookman, the 27-year-old Galatasaray striker has maintained his focus, netting four goals in the tournament so far to propel the Super Eagles to five consecutive victories.
Former captain William Troost-Ekong attributed Osimhen’s relentless drive to his difficult upbringing in Lagos, noting that his “hunger and hustle” make him a natural leader even without the captain’s armband.
While the record is within reach, Osimhen remains humble regarding his predecessor’s status, stating, “It doesn’t matter if I equal the record or I surpass it. I think Mr Rashidi Yekini is the best striker the Super Eagles have ever produced.”
Driven by the goal of securing Nigeria’s fourth continental crown, Osimhen emphasized his commitment to the collective success of the squad, adding, “I’m just trying to win something important for my country. And I think with the help of my team-mates, I’m on that path.”
