Former Brazilian midfielder Paulinho has confirmed the long-standing rumor that Lionel Messi personally recruited him to FC Barcelona during a friendly match between Brazil and Argentina in Australia.
Paulinho, who enjoyed a successful 2017/18 season at the Camp Nou before returning to the Chinese Super League, described the surreal moment the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner approached him as he prepared to take a free-kick.
Recounting the exchange, Paulinho stated, “Suddenly, Leo comes over, looks me straight in the eyes, and says: ‘So… are we going to Barcelona or not?’
Just like that. No explanation, nothing. He turned around and walked away. I didn’t even have time to think. I just said: ‘If you want to take me, I’m going!’”
The midfielder admitted he initially suspected the superstar was joking, but the encounter prompted a frantic call to his agent, only for the deal to be finalized one month later.
