Pep Guardiola has urged the Football League to allow January signing Marc Guehi to play in the Carabao Cup final, citing a lack of “common sense” in current registration rules.
Pep Guardiola has appealed for a rule change to allow Marc Guehi to feature in the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal.
The defender, cup-tied after arriving from Crystal Palace in January, remains ineligible for the Wembley showpiece despite scoring in Saturday’s FA Cup win over Salford.
Guardiola expressed frustration that different domestic competitions operate under conflicting registration laws, specifically regarding mid-season transfers and cup eligibility.
The City boss confirmed the club has petitioned the Football League for an exception, emphasizing the inconsistency of the current system.
“Common sense [it] is not but it’s OK,” Guardiola remarked after Guehi’s debut goal.
He further questioned the logic behind preventing a major investment from playing, stating, “Hopefully you can convince the Carabao Cup that Marc Guehi can play in the final.”
