Sunderland AFC defender Reinildo Mandava has officially retired from international football with Mozambique, citing the physical toll of a serious injury and the logistical demands of competing in the Premier League.
The 31-year-old, who previously enjoyed success at LOSC Lille and Atlético Madrid, confirmed that his final appearance for the “Mambas” took place during the Africa Cup of Nations in December 2025.
In an emotional farewell statement, Mandava explained his decision to step aside for younger players, stating,
“Today, at 31 on the way to 32 years old in a few days, I know that for many they will say that I am young and yes I am, but it has nothing to do with that, but with the serious injury I had, and it’s time to listen to my body.”
He leaves the international stage as a decorated athlete, recently receiving the Medal of Sports Merit for his years of dedication to his country.
