Sunderland secured a 2-1 comeback victory over Newcastle United in a Tyne-Wear derby marred by a mid-match delay due to an allegation of racist abuse from the crowd.
Sunderland defeated Newcastle United 2-1 at St James’ Park on Sunday, completing a season double over their rivals.
Anthony Gordon initially put the Magpies ahead, but second-half goals from Chemsdine Talbi and Brian Brobbey turned the tie.
The match was temporarily halted after Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida reported racist abuse from the home support, prompting an investigation by both the club and the Premier League.
Newcastle issued a firm response following the incident, stating: “Our stance is clear – we do not tolerate discrimination of any form.”
The Premier League confirmed the pause was “in line with the Premier League’s on-field anti-discrimination protocol.”
The defeat leaves Newcastle 12th in the table, facing a three-week break before their next fixture against Crystal Palace following the upcoming international window.
