Aaron Ramsdale emphasized Newcastle’s commitment to defending their Carabao Cup title while Malick Thiaw drew praise for ensuring youngster Lewis Miley received a hero’s acclaim from the St James’ Park crowd.
Newcastle United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has revealed how his teammates have kept him focused on the importance of the Carabao Cup following his summer move from Arsenal.
Although Ramsdale was not part of the squad that lifted the trophy at Wembley last year, he has been frequently reminded of the joy that success brought to Tyneside.
The keeper was seen celebrating wildly as Lewis Miley headed a late winner to secure a 2-1 victory over Fulham.
Reflecting on the club’s desire to retain the trophy, Ramsdale admitted he needs no extra motivation to help the Magpies defend their title.
He noted the high spirits within the camp, stating: “Obviously, I wasn’t here last year, but I know everything about it! I have been made aware of how much joy it brought the players and the supporters.”
The victory over Fulham ensures Newcastle remain in the hunt for consecutive domestic cup honors.
The quarter-final victory also featured a touching moment of sportsmanship from defender Malick Thiaw.
After the final whistle, Thiaw was spotted guiding goal-scorer Lewis Miley toward the Gallowgate End to receive a solo ovation from the home supporters.
Meanwhile, manager Eddie Howe clarified that midfielder Joelinton remained on the bench due to a lingering groin injury, explaining that the Brazilian was only available as an “emergency situation” while he continues his recovery.
