Rangers remain in managerial limbo as Kevin Muscat rules out Ibrox return

Rangers’ managerial search faces another blow as Kevin Muscat pulls out of returning to Ibrox, leaving the club still without a permanent boss.

Rangers’ search for a new manager continues after Kevin Muscat was ruled out of returning to Ibrox. The Shanghai Port boss had been the frontrunner to replace Russell Martin, who was sacked following a 1-1 draw at Falkirk on October 5.

Talks between Muscat and Rangers reportedly reached an advanced stage, with the club willing to make a significant financial commitment. However, the move collapsed due to the impracticality of a delayed start, as Muscat’s Chinese Super League side are still contesting the title.

The setback adds to fan frustration after two other candidates, including former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl and ex-Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, withdrew from the race. Rangers are now in a race against time to appoint a new boss before Thursday’s Europa League tie against Brann in Norway.

Under-19 coach Stevie Smith remains in interim charge, assisted by Brian Gilmour and Rhys Owen. Rangers sit sixth in the Premiership, 13 points behind leaders Hearts, and face Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final next month.
