UEFA has fined Real Madrid €15,000 and issued a suspended partial stadium closure after a supporter was filmed performing a Nazi salute during a Champions League fixture against Benfica.
UEFA’s disciplinary board fined Real Madrid 15,000 euros ($17,000) on Friday following a discriminatory incident during their February 25 play-off victory over Benfica.
A supporter was captured on camera performing a Nazi salute, leading to the club being punished “for the racist and/or discriminatory behaviour of its supporters.”
Real Madrid swiftly ejected the individual identified in the footage before the match began.
The sanction includes a suspended partial stadium closure of 500 seats, effective for a one-year probationary period.
This ruling comes amid heightened scrutiny of fan conduct in European competitions.
While Madrid prepares for a Round of 16 clash against Manchester City, UEFA maintains a firm stance on racism, emphasizing that responsibility for maintaining order in the stands lies directly with the clubs.
