Reece James blamed individual errors for Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Aston Villa, a result that propelled Unai Emery’s surging side toward the top of the table while pushing the Blues out of the Champions League places.
Chelsea captain Reece James has taken full responsibility for his side’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.
Despite dominating the first half and taking the lead via a Joao Pedro own goal, the Blues collapsed after the break.
A clinical double from Ollie Watkins secured the comeback for the visitors, leaving Chelsea with just one win in their last six Premier League outings and sliding out of the top four.
Reflecting on the loss, James admitted the team failed to manage Villa’s second-half tactical shifts. “We have ourselves to blame,” James stated, noting that the team dominated for over an hour before losing momentum.
“Second half one or two moments changed the game. They picked up momentum. It was two slight errors from us and we got punished. This is why it’s the toughest league in the world.”
The victory marks a sensational turnaround for Unai Emery’s side, who have now won eight consecutive league matches.
While Villa were “worried” after a poor start to the campaign, they now sit just three points behind leaders Arsenal.
Chelsea must regroup quickly as they face Bournemouth in midweek, while Villa travel to the Emirates with a chance to move level at the top of the table.
