Rodrygo’s scoring struggles mirror 123-year old Real Madrid record

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo is experiencing the club’s worst goal drought in 123 years, matching Mariano Díaz’s 30 goalless appearances and nearing Rafa Marañón’s minute record, raising questions about his future.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo is currently enduring the worst goal drought suffered by any forward in the club’s 123-year history, having equalled an unwanted all-time record.

According to a report from Sports Illustrated, the Brazilian international, after his goalless cameo in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Girona, has gone 30 consecutive club appearances without finding the net for Real Madrid. This run equals the “unwanted nadir” Mariano Díaz endured between 2020 and 2022.

The two players’ droughts are differentiated by the time on the pitch. While Díaz racked up just 986 minutes over his 30 appearances, Rodrygo’s wait for a club goal stands at 1,339 minutes, as first reported by Spanish statistician MisterChip and The Athletic.

The only forward in Madrid’s history to wait longer by minutes was Rafa Marañón, whose longest drought was a 29-game stretch between 1972 and 1974 where he waited 1,416 minutes before scoring against Atlético Madrid. Rodrygo is now just 78 minutes shy of holding this record all on his own.

Rodrygo’s goalless sequence stretches back to last March, when he scored in a Champions League clash against Atlético Madrid.

His goal tally for the 2025 calendar year is just one La Liga goal, which came in January. The report also notes that he has rarely been trusted to start matches in the 2025–26 season.

The article references a quote from Rodrygo last month, where he stated: “As long as Madrid wants me, I’ll be here.”

The report concludes that if the drought “continues to drag on, they may not want him for much longer.”
