Cuti Romero charged by FA after conduct in Liverpool loss

Tottenham’s Cristian Romero faces an extended suspension after being charged by the FA for improper conduct following his red card in the recent defeat to Liverpool.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been charged by the FA following his dismissal in Saturday’s home defeat against Liverpool.

Already facing a standard suspension for receiving two yellow cards, the Argentine now faces further disciplinary action for his post-red card behavior.

The FA alleges Romero was “acting in an improper manner by failing to promptly leave the field and/or behaving in a confrontational manner towards the match referee,” giving him until January 2 to respond.

The timing of the charge adds significant pressure to head coach Thomas Frank, whose festive period has been marred by poor results and mounting absences.

Spurs are set to be without both Romero and Xavi Simons, who was also sent off during the Liverpool clash.

Romero’s disciplinary record has become a growing concern, as the center-back has already accumulated nine yellow cards in just 14 Premier League appearances this season, leading to questions regarding his consistency.

With Romero’s aggression proving costly and his injury history remaining a factor, speculation has emerged regarding a potential January sale.

Thomas Frank is under immense pressure to stabilize a defense that has struggled throughout the 2025-26 campaign.

Given that both Romero and Micky van de Ven have frequently spent time on the treatment table, the club may look to the transfer market for a more reliable defensive leader to help secure Frank’s position.
