Ruben Amorim admits mistake in secret talks before Manchester United job

Manchester United have dismissed Ruben Amorim after a 14-month spell characterized by disappointing league finishes and a breakdown in internal relations.

Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim after 14 months, ending a tenure marked by both tactical ambition and internal friction.

The decision followed a draw against Leeds United that left the club sixth in the Premier League.

Reflecting on his past conduct, Amorim previously admitted that holding “secret” talks with West Ham while at Sporting was an error, stating: “Obviously my trip was a mistake, the timing was completely wrong, it didn’t seem right.”

Amorim’s time at Old Trafford saw the club stumble to a 15th-place finish last season and miss out on European football following a Europa League final defeat.

Despite heavy summer investment, the hierarchy decided to act now to secure a higher league finish.

The club’s statement noted: “With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.”

The departure marks another chapter in United’s managerial instability, as the club continues to search for the consistency found during the Ferguson era.

Amorim had struggled with the transition from Sporting to the Premier League, admitting his previous lapses in judgment: “It was my mistake, I have to accept it and live with it.”

Darren Fletcher now takes interim charge while the club weighs its next permanent move for the summer.
