Ruben Amorim has sparked a crisis at Manchester United by claiming he will only stay for the 18 months remaining on his contract unless he is granted full managerial control over the club’s sporting structure.
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has cast significant doubt over his long-term future following a 1-1 draw with Leeds.
In an explosive post-match press conference, the 40-year-old suggested he plans to walk away when his contract expires in 18 months.
Amorim expressed frustration with the club’s structure, demanding the authority of a traditional “manager” rather than the “head coach” title assigned by Ineos when he was appointed in late 2024.
The Portuguese tactician escalated his public critique of the club’s internal operations, calling on sporting director Jason Wilcox and the scouting department to improve.
Amorim suggested he was promised greater power to reshape the club’s culture but now feels restricted by the current framework.
He stated: “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach… And it’s going to be like this for 18 months, or when the board decides to change.”
Amorim’s defiant stance comes despite a resilient performance on the pitch at Elland Road.
He reiterated that he would not resign but warned that everyone would “move on” once his current deal concludes.
“I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach,” Amorim insisted, adding that if the hierarchy cannot handle external criticism, then deeper changes are required at the club.
