Arne Slot argues that Liverpool’s disappointing title defense is a direct result of injuries to marquee summer signings totaling £450m.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has defended the club’s record-breaking £450m summer spend, arguing that a relentless injury crisis has prevented the squad from reaching its full potential.
Despite the historic outlay, the reigning champions sit 10 points behind leaders Arsenal.
Slot emphasized that the “full value” of these investments remains untapped because key signings have spent more time on the treatment table than on the pitch.
The frustration centers on high-profile arrivals like British transfer record-holder Alexander Isak, who is sidelined for two months with a fractured leg.
Similarly, £116.5m playmaker Florian Wirtz only recently found the net for the first time, while Jeremie Frimpong’s impact has been limited by persistent niggles.
Most devastatingly, defender Giovanni Leoni suffered a season-ending injury during his club debut in September, further thinning Slot’s defensive options.
Addressing the scrutiny over Liverpool’s massive financial investment, Slot remained firm on the impact of bad luck.
“I think a lot has been said by so many people about the amount of money we’ve spent,” Slot said. “But unfortunately, not all of the money we’ve spent we have used and that has to do with the injuries of these players.”
The Reds now look to stabilize their top-four position against Leeds United.
