Son Heung-min has quickly become a pivotal force for LAFC, driving them deep into the MLS Cup playoffs where a highly anticipated Western Conference semifinal against Thomas Müller’s Vancouver Whitecaps awaits, potentially setting up a dream final against Lionel Messi.
Los Angeles FC (LAFC) has advanced to the MLS Cup Western Conference semifinals, with star forward Son Heung-min ready to lead the charge, according to a report from FotMob.
Since arriving in California three and a half months ago in August, Son has made a significant impact on the club and the league, scoring 10 goals in 12 games.
LAFC secured their spot in the semifinals after comfortably winning the best-of-three first-round series against Austin FC, with Son contributing two goals.
Since his debut against Chicago, LAFC has lost just once in the 12 games he has featured in, winning eight and scoring 30 goals.
Son’s arrival also propelled teammate Denis Bouanga, who went on a scoring spree with 13 goals after the star’s signing. Bouanga finished the regular season with 24 goals, second only to Lionel Messi’s total of 29.
The Western Conference semifinal this weekend will see LAFC take on the Vancouver Whitecaps, who recently signed their own marquee player, Thomas Müller.
The match will be held at BC Place in Vancouver, with an expected attendance of over 53,000.
Son’s successful transition was evident when his first goal for the club—a free-kick against FC Dallas—was named the 2025 MLS Goal of the Year.
Many are predicting a thrilling MLS Cup final in December between Inter Miami and LAFC, pitting Messi against Son.
