Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has officially apologized to Egypt after fans displayed “inappropriate behavior” and chanted hostile slogans during a goalless friendly match in Barcelona.
The Spanish government has strongly condemned the “regrettable incidents” involving hostile chanting during Spain’s friendly against Egypt.
Minister José Manuel Albares confirmed to his Egyptian counterpart that the behavior “does not represent the Spanish people nor does it reflect the distinguished historical relations between the two countries.”
He further pledged that the government would take strict legal action against those involved in the acts.
Outrage has spread through sporting circles after star winger Lamine Yamal publicly denounced the chants.
Stadium management at Espanyol’s ground previously warned the crowd, yet some fans responded with further jeers.
Albares emphasized that Spain “will not tolerate any form of hatred or discrimination,” as authorities move to address the fallout from the match and restore the integrity of the international fixture.
