Stanley Nwabali admits AFCON injury battle amidst Super Eagles criticism

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has confirmed he is playing through injury at AFCON 2025 following a wave of criticism regarding his performance in Nigeria’s recent victory over Tunisia.

Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has admitted to battling persistent fitness issues throughout the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite starting the tournament sharply, the 29-year-old’s form has come under intense scrutiny following a shaky performance in the Super Eagles’ 3-2 victory over Tunisia.

Nwabali was criticized for conceding twice on only two shots on target, including a costly slip on the opening goal that many felt he should have easily saved.

Addressing the dip in form, the Chippa United shot-stopper revealed he is playing through pain with the help of the national team’s medical staff.

“I was injured but with the help of team doctors and physios I’m able to stand on the pitch and play,” Nwabali said.

He acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, adding, “It’s quite tough for me because it’s not something you come out to say.”

The revelation of Nwabali’s physical condition has sparked debate over whether coach Eric Chelle should bench the goalkeeper for the upcoming clash against Uganda.

While Nwabali maintains he is trying to “just represent my country,” fans have grown increasingly vocal about his recent “rash and careless” play.

With his status as Nigeria’s number one now in question, the keeper faces significant pressure to return to full fitness and peak form.
