Sunday Oliseh defends Nigeria AFCON analysis following online backlash

Former head coach of the Super Eagles, Sunday Oliseh, has responded firmly to criticism over his television analysis of Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 opener against Tanzania, Soccernet.ng reports.

Sunday Oliseh has issued a firm response to criticism regarding his television analysis of Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Tanzania.

Following the AFCON 2025 opener, football fans on social media accused the former captain of being overly critical and focusing on the team’s flaws despite the positive result.

In an official statement, Oliseh clarified that his objective critique was intended to help the national team grow during the tournament.

The controversy erupted on X (formerly Twitter), where supporters interpreted Oliseh’s punditry as a lack of support for the players and coaching staff.

Addressing the claims, Oliseh stated, “I am deeply saddened by the recent suggestions on social media that my analysis of the Super Eagles’ performance against Tanzania stems from a lack of support for the team.” He emphasized that his heart remains with the squad and head coach Eric Chelle.

Oliseh highlighted the professional necessity of impartiality in his role as a television analyst.

He argued that his decades of service to Nigerian football should speak for itself, noting that “Constructive honesty is not a sign of dislike; it is a tool for improvement born out of a desire to see our nation succeed.”

He also pointed out the inconsistency of critics, mentioning that he was recently accused of being “too supportive” of the staff.

Closing his statement, the former Borussia Dortmund star urged Nigerians to move past social media distractions and unite behind the Super Eagles as they continue their continental campaign.

He reaffirmed that his loyalty to the country remains “unwavering and requires no defense.”

With the air cleared, attention now shifts back to the pitch as Eric Chelle’s men prepare for their upcoming fixtures in Group C of the Africa Cup of Nations.
