Sunderland has officially announced the acquisition of defender Omar Alderete from Getafe. The Black Cats secured the Paraguay international for a reported fee of £10 million (€11.5 million), marking their eleventh signing of the summer transfer window.
Alderete's arrival at the Stadium of Light sees him commit to a four-year contract, reinforcing Sunderland's defensive options. During his time with Getafe, the center-back made 99 appearances across all competitions over four seasons, with 36 of those coming in the most recent campaign.
The 28-year-old defender played a crucial role in Getafe's defensive record in La Liga, as they conceded the joint fourth-fewest goals, despite a 13th-place finish. The South American defender showcased consistency in a defense that let in just 39 goals.
Before his move to Spain, Alderete began his professional journey with Cerro Porteno in the Paraguayan Primera Division. He ventured into European football in 2019, with spells at Basel, Hertha Berlin, and Valencia prior to joining Getafe.
Following the transfer, Alderete shared his enthusiasm, stating, "I’m feeling great about signing for this great team, so I’m really happy. I’m looking forward to my first experience in the Premier League. It’s a great challenge for me."
Alderete also acknowledged Sunderland's history, adding, "I know it’s a historic club, and when they told me there was an opportunity, I was excited about coming here. It’s always important to have the support of the people, and I’m going to give it my all on the pitch."
Should international clearance come through in time, Alderete could potentially debut for Sunderland in their upcoming match against West Ham on Saturday.
