Sunderland has completed the signing of Robin Roefs, a 22-year-old Dutch goalkeeper from NEC Nijmegen, on a five-year deal, pending international clearance. Roefs’ impressive performance in the Eredivisie last season earned him this move, adding competition for the goalkeeper position at Sunderland. He expressed enthusiasm for joining the club and is eager to face the challenges ahead in the Premier League.
Sunderland AFC has officially announced the signing of Dutch youth international goalkeeper, Robin Roefs, from NEC Nijmegen. The transfer is pending international clearance. The 22-year-old joins the Black Cats for an undisclosed fee, committing to a five-year contract at the Stadium of Light. Roefs' arrival marks Sunderland's eighth summer signing, following the recent addition of Granit Xhaka.
Roefs made 32 appearances for NEC Nijmegen last season, and recording 10 clean sheets. His performance helped secure NEC's qualification for the 2025-26 Conference League. The Netherlands Under-21 international brings international experience to Sunderland, having earned 10 caps, including appearances at this summer’s European Championships where the Jong Oranje reached the semi-finals.
Roefs faces the challenge of competing with Anthony Patterson, the Championship play-off final hero, for the number one spot. Last season, Roefs was ranked fifth for goals prevented across Europe's top leagues. "Joining a club with such a rich history is a proud moment, and I’m eager for the challenge in the Premier League,” said Roefs. He added, "Last season was my first full senior campaign, and I’m pleased with how it went, especially my stats. Being part of Sunderland’s journey is very special, and I’m looking forward to the season ahead."
Roefs could make his debut against Real Betis at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, pending international clearance.
