Super Eagles avert strike as CBN processes AFCON allowances

The NFF has engaged the Central Bank of Nigeria to pay the Super Eagles’ outstanding AFCON bonuses directly to players, successfully averting a planned strike ahead of their quarterfinal match against Algeria.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is now processing the direct payment of allowances to Super Eagles players and officials.

This move aims to resolve a tense standoff involving unpaid bonuses from four matches against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Mozambique.

The NFF assured the squad that funds will land in individual bank accounts once the banking process is finalized.

The intervention follows reports of a potential boycott, as players threatened to skip training and refuse travel to Marrakech for their quarterfinal clash against Algeria.

Journalist Tobi Adepoju shared insights from a top official, stating: “The monies have been processed from CBN to individual banks. The players and officials will receive all their bonuses when the process is completed.”

This dispute threatened to derail a perfect tournament run.Despite the off-pitch friction, Nigeria remains unbeaten in AFCON 2025 after a dominant 4-0 round-of-16 victory over Mozambique.

The team is now scheduled to face Algeria on Saturday, January 10, with a semi-final spot on the line.

International observers noted the timing of the crisis, with journalist Oluwashina Okeleji remarking: “Three-time AFCON champions Nigeria have a strange ability to self-sabotage,” following the squad’s initial refusal to travel.
