Despite dropping one spot to 37th globally, Nigeria’s Super Falcons retained their ranking as the number-one women’s football team in Africa, while rivals like Ghana, South Africa, and Morocco utilized the international window to gain significant ranking points.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have dropped one spot globally to 37th in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking, released this week.
Despite the fresh slip in their global standing, the nine-time African champions firmly retained their position as the number-one ranked football nation on the continent. The marginal drop ends a six-ranking run in the 36th position.
The Super Falcons’ decline is largely attributed to a relatively quiet international window with limited match activity.
Although Nigeria successfully secured their ticket to the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) against Benin Republic, the results were not impactful enough to positively influence their global standing.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s closest rivals seized the opportunity to strengthen their ranking points. Ghana, who climbed five places to 62nd, cemented their status as Africa’s third-best side.
South Africa also made a strong showing, cruising to a 2-0 victory over Morocco, while Zambia engaged in multiple friendlies.
With Nigeria’s period of inactivity, the gap between them and the chasing pack has narrowed considerably.
The African top five now features Nigeria (37th), South Africa (55th), Ghana (62nd), Zambia (64th), and Morocco (66th), setting the stage for an intensified WAFCON challenge.
