Sven Goran Eriksson’s family sells mansion to pay debts

Sven-Göran Eriksson’s family sold his luxury Swedish mansion for a reduced price and liquidated memorabilia to help settle over £7 million in debts left after the former England manager’s passing.

According to Reuters reporting, former England national team manager Sven‑Göran Eriksson died with debts totalling £8.64 million, against assets valued at £4.8 million.

The Swedish-born coach, who passed away in August 2024 at age 76, left an estate that showed a deficit of about £3.8 million.

The majority of Eriksson’s outstanding liabilities stemmed from UK tax debt, with a figure of £7.25 million owed to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

Compensation claims and losses involving a financial adviser are also cited in the public record as contributing to the short-fall.

Among the assets being used to offset the liabilities is his lakeside mansion in Sunne, Sweden — a seven-bedroom property with private beach, pool house, gym, and tennis court, which has been listed for sale at around £1.8 million.

The property, bought in 2002 for about £420,000, had seen its valuation slip substantially, prompting its inclusion in the asset-realisation process.

Eriksson’s management career included stints with the England national team (2001-2006), Manchester City, and several European clubs.

Despite his professional success, his financial management has now become a major posthumous headline.

The full scale of the shortfall underlines the financial pressures even high-profile coaching careers can leave in their wake.
