Swedish media harshly criticized Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres after Sweden’s 2-0 defeat to Switzerland left their World Cup qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
Swedish media have slammed Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres and Liverpool forward Alexander Isak following Sweden’s 2-0 home defeat to Switzerland in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
The loss in Stockholm on Friday leaves Sweden bottom of Group B with just one point from three games, with goals from Granit Xhaka and Johan Manzambi sealing victory for the visitors.
Gyokeres and Isak both failed to register a single shot on target, with the latter hitting the post in the first half and missing another chance to assist Lucas Bergvall, who was booed by home fans after squandering a sitter.
Fotbollskanalen handed Gyokeres a 1/5 rating, writing: “Sweden needed Gyokeres at the top of his game in the important World Cup qualifying match. But he didn’t get it in crucial situations.” Svenska Fans added: “He feels so resigned and awkward.”
Isak, captaining Sweden for the first time, earned a slightly higher 2/5 rating. Fotbollskanalen noted: “Missed a huge chance when the ball hit the post.” Svenska Fans, however, were more scathing: “Did not succeed very often with his actions.”
Sweden must now win all remaining qualifiers, starting with Monday’s clash against Kosovo, to keep their faint World Cup hopes alive.
